# API keys

Create, scope, rotate and revoke B3IQ API keys.

An API key lets a program call B3IQ as you. Create one on the **API keys** page of the dashboard.
The token is shown once; store it in your secret manager.

## What a key can do

| Access | Lets the key | Works with |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Inference | Call the OpenAI-compatible API at `https://b3iq.org/v1/api` | Any OpenAI SDK |

A key can be limited to some of your machines when you create it.

## Personal and organization keys

A key created while an organization is selected belongs to that organization and acts as you inside
it. It can do what both the key and you are allowed to do there. If you are removed from the
organization, or the organization is deleted, the key is revoked. If your role there loses inference
access, the key stops working until you have it again.

## Expiry and rotation

Every new key expires 30, 60 or 90 days, or 1 year, after you create it (30 days unless you choose
otherwise). To rotate, create a new key, move your program to it, then revoke the old one.

Keys that start with `b3iq_gateway_` are retired. They no longer work: the API returns 401 and every existing one was revoked.
Create a new key on the [Keys page](https://b3iq.org/dashboard/keys) and swap it in.

## Revoking a key

Revoke a key from the API keys page. It stops working on the next request.
